FAQ (Common questions about therapy process)

Welcome to the FAQ section of The Thought Loft! I am so glad you’re here. Here you'll find answers to common questions and helpful information to guide you regarding the process of therapy

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a way to help people experiencing significant emotional distress that is

coming in the way of them being physically well, enjoying personal relationships or working

productively. Psychotherapy begins with the therapist understanding the background of the

person seeking help and the concerns that led them to seek help. Following this, the client and

psychotherapist come to an agreement about the goals of treatment, treatment procedures, and a regular schedule for the time, place and duration of their treatment sessions.

How do I know if Therapy is right for me?

People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons—from navigating major life transitions and healing from past trauma to simply wanting to understand themselves better. If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or want to make a change in your life, therapy can provide the supportive space and tools to help you move forward. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit. A health provider might also suggest therapy for addressing concerns which would be helpful along with medications, which is also a good reason to start therapy.

How long will I be in therapy?

This is deeply personal and varies for everyone. You didn't develop these problems overnight or in a matter of a few weeks--you're not going to work through them in a solid way in a short period of time either. Some people find relief and achieve their goals in a few months, while others engage in a longer-term process for deeper exploration.I believe in long term, thoughtful and sustained work to aid in better transformation. That being said,  I will regularly check in on your progress and collaboratively decide what feels right for you. You are always in control of your journey.

Tele-therapy or In person therapy?

Tele-psychotherapy refers to the provision of psychotherapy services using tele-

communication technologies including email, text messaging, video conferencing, online

chat, messaging, or internet phone. Tele-psychotherapy would typically involve all aspects

of psychotherapy, except that it would be offered using telecommunication technologies.

Most often used technology is via video conferencing. I offer both in-person and tele-therapy sessions to accommodate your needs. Whether you prefer face-to-face interaction or the convenience of online sessions, both options are equally effective. You can choose the one that best fits your schedule, location, and personal preference.

What is the cancellation policy? - A commitment to Our Shared Time

Your therapy time is reserved exclusively for you. It is a time and space I hold for you each week. To maintain the integrity of our work and ensure I can provide the best care for all my clients, I have a firm and consistent cancellation policy.

  •  Required Notice: I require at least 24 hours' notice for any cancellation or rescheduling of an appointment.

  •  Late Cancellations: Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged the full session fee and is your direct responsibility.

  • Missed Sessions (No-Shows): If you do not attend your scheduled session without any prior notice, it is considered a missed session and will be charged the full session fee.

Why This Policy is Necessary:

This policy is not a penalty, but a necessary commitment to the therapeutic framework. It serves several important purposes:

  •  It protects your dedicated time: Your weekly session is a consistent, protected space for your work. Honouring this time is a key part of the therapeutic process.

  •  It ensures fairness and availability: By committing to your slot, you are preventing another client who could have used that time from booking it. The fee allows me to hold that time for you exclusively, even when it cannot be filled last minute.

  • It upholds professional boundaries: Clear and consistent policies create a safe, predictable, and professional environment for our work together.

Exceptions: I understand that true emergencies, such as sudden serious illness or accidents, can occur. In such unforeseen and extreme circumstances, the fee may be waived at my discretion. Please note that routine illnesses, work conflicts, or transportation issues typically do not qualify for an exception.

How to Cancel or Reschedule:

To cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call or email me directly at least 24 hours in advance. Your timely communication is greatly appreciated and is what allows for the flexibility to offer the slot to others.

By booking a session, you acknowledge and agree to this cancellation policy. Is everything I say confidential?

Absolutely. Confidentiality is the cornerstone of therapy. What you share in our sessions is legally and ethically protected. There are only a few, rare exceptions to this, which are mandated by law: if there is an imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or in cases of suspected child or elder abuse. We will discuss the limits of confidentiality in more detail in our first session.
